Our brand
by Karsten Wade
Discussions have started back up around creating a brand with associated
logo, color palette, design elements, and the like. You are invited to
participate, as a community member reviewing design ideas, or directly
involved in generating designs and related tasks.
Ideally, we'll be able to apply some beta decisions in the debut
announcement, such as color palette and a logo idea.
Main branding task and tracking ticket:
https://github.com/theopensourceway/theproject/issues/62
Logo discussion:
https://github.com/theopensourceway/theproject/issues/13
These elements are the building blocks and patterns for the website,
guidebook styling, print book styling (for PDF), and so forth.
If you are interested in this topic, we should be seeing some items
coming from Tuomas Kuosmanen and Shaun McCance (from Red Hat's OSPO) for
your input.
The list of items in issue #13 are the needs we're tracking for this.
Take a look, any questions or anything missing?
We could use some illustration skills, especially around a book cover
design that can be applied to the PDF and prepare for a possible printed
run future.
Tuomas—what other skill gaps do we need to fill?
There are also some web designer skills needed around styling the
Asciidoc output, including building a multi-page website for the HTML
version (perhaps generated by Antora?).
Shaun—what skill gaps do we have around the various book rendering tools?
There are some large and some small tasks in here, and we should all be
able to review some iterations of the work created by those who step up
to work on the task. Ultimately, we should let designers and the doers
of the task decide on the choices we consider and brand we land on.
Best regards,
- Karsten

Acronyms: TOSW vs OSW
by Karsten Wade
Quick poll, what is your preference for a short-hand acronym for this
community:
A. OSW (the Open Source Way)
B. TOSW (The Open Source Way)
C. Something else?
My thoughts below ....

I've been doing "TOSW" for a long time, but the more writing I'm doing
about the project, the more I recognize the value in OSW as being
distinctive and easier to work with grammatically.
What do you think?
Regardless, I still want to get twitter.com/tosw if we can find the
friend in Toronto who has that account from 2009.
Best regards,

Finishing the debut, needing help
by Karsten Wade
Hey folks:
I'm somewhat stalled/stuck with the bits around the debut
announcement[1] this month. I'm also recognizing I'm falling into my
habit under stress of feeling responsible for everything and not putting
energy into communicating and asking for help. ;-D
So to follow our own best practices, I'd like to outline where we are
with the debut and what needs to be completed so other folks can take on
some of the responsibilities and pleasure of the work. That is, would
you like to help?
The status and to-do item tracking is here:
https://github.com/theopensourceway/theproject/projects/3?card_filter_que...
Even the 'Assigned' items need help in creating and reviewing the works.
Cards have varying levels of details, I hope there is enough to start
with, ask any questions please. (This plan/list came from an original
punchlist[2] and may be incomplete!)
I'm working on the two blog posts right now, and I'll leave other cards
unassigned for others to pick up and work on. Those include:
* Creating the good old release announcement itself.
* Working with Shaun, Tuomas, and myself on branding and logo.
- We are featuring our "brand in beta form" for the release; it may
be alpha form?
* Applying alpha/beta branding to HTML/CSS, PDF, and EPub.
* Review GitHub page and theopensourceway.org for changes ahead of
incoming attention.
* Preparing social media content for the debut.
Chime in with interest, don't hesitate, even small contributions are
welcome and helpful!
Kind regards,
- Karsten
Footnotes
=========
[1]
To set the context for the debut: the end goal is to have a project
release announcement to attract readers to our work. Our subtext is,
growing our readership (users) while making this overall project easy to
participate in attracts and enables members and contributors for the
community of practice.
Once the debut/promotion of our efforts is out there, we can begin other
community efforts that depend on the world knowing about the guidebook:
* Those of us interested in gathering 'why' stories from non-author
community managers can start. The planning for that happens here:
https://github.com/theopensourceway/theproject/issues/56
* Editorial is cleared to begin working on the 2.1 content—
- Expansion of self-care/mental health
- Expansion of mentoring content
- What else?
* Discuss and choose a governance for ourselves.
* Start the community of practice elements, such as monthly
demo/practice meetings open to the wider community.
* All the other stuff at:
https://github.com/theopensourceway/theproject/issues/
